A changing tobacco economy
There are almost five million cigarette consumers inAlgeria, according to figures published by the national tobacco distribution company. The market is worth several tens of billions of dinars a year.
This situation makes the sector a key player in the nationaleconomy, but also a challenge for public authorities, between public health and balancing the budget.
The successive price rises can be explained by the rise in specific taxes on tobacco, incorporated into the Finance Act 2025. In particular, this law imposes an additional tax of 15% on the retail price, in order to increase revenue and encourage a reduction in consumption.
Sidebar: economic analysis of 2025 increases
Tobacco industry players explain that the latest increase stems from a twofold imperative:
- preserve the economic life of manufacturers and sellers,
- and align taxation with public health objectives.
This reform is based on a more transparent market structure, in line with international standards. Informal trading practices are gradually being phased out, in favor of sales that are more closely regulated by law.
Imported products, notably Rothmans, remain the most expensive, while local packsremain affordable for the majority of Algerian consumers. The average cost of a pack is now estimated at 460 DZD, compared with 420 DZD a year earlier.
Impact on the daily lives of Algerians
This price increase has a direct impact on the daily lives of Algerians, already marked by a general rise in the cost of living. In Algiers, Oran and Constantine, vendors report a slight drop in sales since the spring.
For some smokers, tobacco is now perceived as a luxury product. Others are turning to economical packagesor local alternatives.
In the big cities, the situation remains contrasted: consumption falls slightly in urban areas, but remains stable in rural areas where prices are sometimes lower. The tobaccoeconomy thus remains a paradoxical pillar of the country, between budgetary dependence and public health issues.
A turning point for health: focus on cessation and MyLaserTabac
As the tobacco market continues to transform, new solutions are emerging to help smokers quit. These include auricular reflexology combined with anti-smoking laseroffered by MyLaserTabac, is winning over more and more smokers in Algeria and France.
This natural method uses a gentle laser to stimulate specific points in the ear. By regulating addiction-related nerve signals, it helps to reduce cravings, stress and cigarette consumption without pain or nicotine substitutes.
Thanks to its non-invasive approach, MyLaserTabac has established itself as a modern, effective and sustainable solution for quitting smoking, while supporting the public health objectives set by the 2025 Finance Act.
