The expected return of Champix in mid-June 2025
After a four-year hiatus, Champix® (varenicline) is back in pharmacies in France. Since mid-June 2025, the drug has been available again, in line with the steps taken by theANSM and accepted by theEMA. This was made possible by a complete reformulation of boththe excipients and the manufacturing process – to eliminate all traces of the harmful nitrosamines that were once responsible for its withdrawal from the market in 2021.
Background and reasons for this decision

Champix was withdrawn following the detection of an impurity (N-nitroso-varenicline), considered a probable carcinogen; a mass recall of batches was then carried out. - 2025: controlled return
Since June 16, 2025, Champix has been back on prescription. This availability is subject to a number of restrictions, including boxed batches of 28 or 56 film-coated tablets and reimbursement at 65%, in line with the reimbursement listing published in the Journal Officiel. - Scientific validation confirmed
The French National Authority for Health (HAS) has maintained its position: varenicline offers a significant medical service rendered in cases of smoking cessation, particularly for smokers with a high level of nicotine dependence (Fagerström ≥ 7). Dosage remains unchanged: a 12-week course of treatment, renewable once if necessary.
