A recent Australian study published in the journal Thorax<\/em> reveals that men who were exposed to passive smoking as children are more likely to have children of their own with impaired lung function in adulthood. At the age of 53, their FEV1<\/strong> (forced expiratory volume in one second) was 56% lower than that of children of unexposed fathers. <\/p>\n\n

The researchers point out that possible genetic changes – particularly during prepuberty in boys – could explain this transmission of respiratory dysfunction to their offspring.<\/p>\n\n

Consequences already active in children<\/h2>\n\n

Exposure to passive smoking already affects the very young through frequent respiratory infections, asthma, ear infections and bronchitis. In the long term, these conditions increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and lung cancer. <\/p>\n\n

There is also evidence that passive smoking causes epigenetic changes – including DNA methylation – in children, sometimes as intense as in active smokers. Even today, around 40% of the world’s children<\/strong> are subjected to this dangerous exposure. <\/p>\n\n
