It had become automatic, a reflex ingrained in his body, his mind, his life. Over the years, he had stopped counting. However, when one day he did the sums, the shock was brutal. In ten years, almost <strong>all<\/strong> his <strong>money<\/strong> had literally burned up in <strong>cigarettes<\/strong>. &#8220;When I saw that I&#8217;d spent the equivalent of a <strong>wagonload<\/strong> of bills, I felt sick to my <strong>stomach<\/strong>,&#8221; he says, sitting in a public <strong>place<\/strong> in his <strong>town<\/strong> in western <strong>France<\/strong>.     <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The daily life of a city smoker: stress, noise and addiction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marc was working in the municipal <strong>services<\/strong>, and a <strong>development<\/strong> <strong>plan<\/strong> put in place by the <strong>government<\/strong> had enabled him to find a stable job. But with the <strong>noise<\/strong>, the daily <strong>train<\/strong> <strong>problems<\/strong>, the delays, the <strong>public<\/strong> pressure, <strong>smoking<\/strong> seemed to him to be the only &#8220;break&#8221;. The <strong>police<\/strong>, neighborhood <strong>affairs<\/strong>, the commotion in the downtown <strong>lanes<\/strong>, all encouraged him to <strong>smoke<\/strong> even more. He thought it was the only <strong>interest in<\/strong> his <strong>daily life<\/strong>. The session lasted less than 45 <strong>minutes<\/strong>, and for the first time in <strong>years<\/strong>, Marc didn&#8217;t feel like <strong>smoking<\/strong> afterwards. No irritability, no cravings. Just a strange, profound calm. &#8220;I thought it was false <strong>advertising<\/strong>, and yet&#8230; the<strong>effectiveness<\/strong> was immediate.&#8221;    <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A new lifestyle after quitting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marc replaced <strong>cigarettes<\/strong> with <strong>nature<\/strong> walks, near the disused <strong>train<\/strong> <strong>line<\/strong><strong>west of<\/strong> the <strong>city<\/strong>. He rediscovered the<strong>interior of<\/strong> his <strong>home<\/strong>, cleaning out stubborn <strong>odors<\/strong>, putting away <strong>ashtrays<\/strong> and emptying jacket <strong>pockets<\/strong>. He even found a handwritten <strong>text<\/strong> by his son, explaining that he was afraid &#8220;Dad would die from the <strong>smoke<\/strong> &#8220;. It was a wake-up call.    He understood that weaning himself off tobacco <strong>was<\/strong> not just a personal battle, but a gesture of <strong>protection<\/strong> for his <strong>children<\/strong>, and for the<strong>environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Public services mobilized for health<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of a new regional health <strong>plan<\/strong>, the <strong>town council<\/strong> offered <strong>free<\/strong> outdoor <strong>sports sessions<\/strong>. This public <strong>service<\/strong> was a driving force. Reconnecting with <strong>sport<\/strong>, reconnecting with the <strong>body<\/strong>, breathing <strong>deeply<\/strong> at the<strong>water<\/strong>&#8216;s edge, listening to the <strong>sounds of<\/strong> the birds rather than the clanging of the lighter, it was quite simply the beginning of a <strong>new life<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Catching your breath through sport<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Free sessions in the heart of the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marc&#8217;s first cardio class lasted&#8230; 7 <strong>minutes<\/strong>. The benevolent <strong>coach<\/strong> told him that &#8220;every step is a victory&#8221;. Today, he runs 3 times a <strong>week<\/strong> in the surrounding <strong>mountains<\/strong>. He has enrolled in a <strong>municipal structure<\/strong>, financed by <strong>social affairs<\/strong>. Swimming in clean water, breathing deeply, feeling his <strong>insides<\/strong> soothe, makes him feel alive again. He even recalls a moment when a <strong>bear<\/strong> appeared on a trek in the <strong>Pyrenees<\/strong>. &#8220;I saw a quiet strength in its <strong>eyes<\/strong>. I knew I was ready to turn the page.    <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conveying a message to children, relatives and the general public<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Marc testifies. He has written a self-published <strong>book<\/strong>. He speaks in classrooms, with the regional <strong>health<\/strong> <strong>protection<\/strong><strong>association<\/strong>. He tells how <strong>addiction<\/strong> stole his <strong>years<\/strong>, his <strong>money<\/strong>, his <strong>pleasures<\/strong>. But also how he got on with <strong>life<\/strong> <strong>.<\/strong> He wants to tell others that &#8220;it doesn&#8217;t <strong>have to be<\/strong> this way&#8221;. That <strong>everything<\/strong> can change if we accept to get help, and open our <strong>eyes<\/strong>.
