Simple, accessible and aggressively marketed, puffs are a hit, but at what price? And above all, what are the consequences for health and the future of smoking cessation?  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. What is a &#8220;puff&#8221; and why does it appeal?<\/h3>\n\n<p>A <strong>puff<\/strong> (also known as a disposable electronic cigarette) is a pre-filled, ready-to-use device with no settings, refills or maintenance. The user uses it until it runs out, then throws it away. This ease of use appeals to many beginner smokers and vapoteurs.<br\/>Compared to the classic cigarette, the puff combines a number of advantages:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Immediate simplicity<\/strong>: no handling, no tank to fill, no adjustments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Portable and discreet<\/strong>: mini format, streamlined design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attractive marketing<\/strong>: a wide choice of flavors, bright colors, attractive positioning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accessibility<\/strong>: sometimes sold at prices comparable to a pack of cigarettes, making it &#8220;less intimidating&#8221; for the uninitiated user.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>This rise in popularity has not gone unnoticed. At the same time, <strong>penalties<\/strong> for retailers who fail to comply with the ban can reach <strong>100,000 euros<\/strong>, or even <strong>200,000 euros in the event of a repeat offence<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p>This regulatory milestone underlines the fact that the initial perceived advantages of puffs &#8211; accessibility and simplified use &#8211; are accompanied by dangers that are often underestimated.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Puff vs cigarette: strengths, weaknesses, risks<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puff forces<\/h4>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Easy start-up<\/strong> &#8211; no technical training required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discretion<\/strong> &#8211; small format, not as strong an odour as a conventional cigarette<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sensory appeal<\/strong> &#8211; sweet flavours, multiple aromas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fashion effect<\/strong> &#8211; &#8220;young and modern&#8221; image<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weaknesses &amp; risks<\/h4>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased dependence<\/strong> &#8211; some puffs contain very high levels of nicotine (up to 5%)  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disposable use &amp; waste<\/strong> &#8211; accumulation of lithium batteries, plastics, electronic components  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Effects on heart rate and blood pressure<\/strong> &#8211; permanent stimulation of the nervous system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk of slippage to conventional cigarettes<\/strong> &#8211; some young puff users may be introduced to nicotine via puffs, then migrate to tobacco.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Uncertain regulation<\/strong> &#8211; before 2025, many products did not comply with European standards, creating grey areas in terms of composition and safety.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In comparison, a <strong>conventional cigarette<\/strong> remains a major source of health risks (cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular disease).
