A wind of change is blowing across Europe. According to a confidential document<\/g> revealed in Geneva<\/g>, the European Commission<\/g> is planning<\/g> a gradual ban<\/g> on filter<\/g> cigarettes<\/g>. This historic measure could transform the fight against smoking<\/strong> and upset the habits of millions of smokers<\/strong> in France<\/strong>, Switzerland<\/strong> and the rest of the world<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

For several years<\/strong> now, European governments<\/strong> have been putting forward proposals<\/strong> to reduce tobacco<\/strong> consumption, encouraged by theWorld Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> and the Geneva<\/strong> International Convention<\/strong> on Tobacco<\/strong> Control. Today, an entire regulatory framework<\/strong> is set to evolve, in a context where public health<\/strong>, theenvironment<\/strong> and transparency vis-\u00e0-vis theindustry<\/strong> are becoming priorities. <\/p>\n\n

Filters, a false ally turned pollution symbol<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Filter<\/strong> cigarettes<\/strong> have long been presented as a step forward for smokers<\/strong>‘ health<\/strong>. However, studies carried out by the European Commission<\/strong> and several independent organizations<\/strong> show that these filters<\/strong> retain very little tar<\/strong> and nicotine<\/strong>, while encouraging consumers to smoke<\/strong> more. <\/p>\n\n

The paradox is striking: invented to reduce risks<\/strong>, the filter<\/strong> has become a major source of pollution<\/strong>. Made from non-biodegradable plastics<\/strong>, they represent a direct threat to theenvironment<\/strong>. According to the European Commission<\/strong>, discarded cigarette butts are one of the world’<\/strong>s most polluting products<\/strong>, second only to plastic<\/strong> packaging. <\/p>\n\n

This measure<\/strong>, supported by several member states<\/strong>, is part of a global strategy to reduce the harmful substances<\/strong>present in tobacco<\/strong> products<\/strong>. European governments<\/strong>, backed by the European Council<\/strong>, claim that the ban<\/strong> is primarily for health<\/strong> reasons. Every year<\/strong>, tobacco<\/strong> causes over 700,000 deaths on the continent. The lungs<\/strong> remain the main victims, with cancer<\/strong> accounting for over 80% of nicotine-related<\/strong> illnesses. <\/p>\n\n

Faced with this, the tobacco<\/strong>industry<\/strong> is trying to defend its interests. Some manufacturers argue that the disappearance of the filter could<\/g>lead to a resurgence in the sale of<\/g> home-made cigarettes<\/g>, which are even more dangerous. Others argue that consumers will flee to vaping<\/strong>, a phenomenon that is booming worldwide<\/strong> and already regulated by the European Commission<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n
