A joint now and then? &#8220;It relaxes me, I won&#8217;t be driving long&#8221;. Drinking and driving has long been stigmatized, but cannabis? That one seemed lighter, less &#8220;dangerous&#8221;. Then I read the recently published study, and everything changed.     <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the study reveals<\/h3>\n\n<p>The study, conducted in Maryland County, USA, shows that around <strong>41.9%<\/strong> of drivers who died in accidents had <strong>active THC<\/strong> in their blood. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pourquoidocteur.fr\/Articles\/Question-d-actu\/52764-Cannabis-volant-l-etude-tire-sonnette-d-alarme?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why Docteur+1<\/a><br\/>In other words: almost one in two drivers in this context had consumed cannabis shortly before the accident.<br\/>In France, saliva tests carried out on school buses between January and August 2025 also reveal a disturbing reality: out of more than <strong>30,000 screenings<\/strong>, 119 drivers tested positive for a narcotic (including cannabis first), compared with 63 for alcohol.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>Read also:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mylasertabac.com\/en\/news\/anti-smoking-and-addictions-laser-training\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">You want to start a booming business in the health sector. Yet research shows that cannabis affects <strong>alertness<\/strong>, prolongs <strong>reaction time<\/strong> and impairs coordination &#8211; all essential elements for driving.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some consumers think they drive &#8220;cool&#8221;, without feeling any effect. The study underlines that <em>tolerance<\/em> exists, but that it masks the danger at the cost of weakened reflexes.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Until now, prevention messages have been much stronger for alcohol than for drugs. This late alignment explains a persistent lack of awareness. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I remember as a parent, as a citizen<\/h3>\n\n<p>As a parent, I realize how urgent this issue is: a young person who smokes a joint before driving doesn&#8217;t necessarily see himself as &#8220;under the influence&#8221;. And yet.<br\/>On the road, every second counts. The study reminds us that even a slight alteration can be enough to tip us over the edge. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latribuneauto.com\/conseils\/utilisation\/9550-le-cannabis-au-volant-multiplie-par-deux-le-risque-daccident-mortel-sur-la-route?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">La Tribune Auto+1<\/a><br\/>For me, this means: we talk about these subjects with my children. We talk about reality; we don&#8217;t let time and unconsciousness take over.   <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good information also means understanding<\/h3>\n\n<p>The effects of cannabis at the wheel go beyond the simple &#8220;state of inebriation&#8221;. Slowed reflex speed, impaired concentration, misjudgment of distances&#8230; All these dimensions are confirmed. <br\/>One thing the study highlights is that it&#8217;s not just <strong>how much<\/strong> you smoke, but <strong>when<\/strong> you drive after smoking. Even occasional users can have an effect lasting several hours.    <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we can do today<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It&#8217;s time to approach this subject with sincerity: not as a &#8220;you mustn&#8217;t&#8221; but as a &#8220;you know why I say that&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduce clear benchmarks: driving implies that I am fully capable; any substance that weakens this capacity is incompatible with driving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote the alternative: for those who consume, it&#8217;s better to choose a time without driving, plan a return trip without a vehicle, or postpone driving for several hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As a structure, educator or parent, convey a message that includes cannabis in the same way we talk about alcohol: it&#8217;s not just about legality, it&#8217;s about <strong>safety<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing our perception<\/h3>\n\n<p>This study has convinced me that cannabis cannot be treated separately: it is a real risk factor for driving.<br\/>I can choose to use it, but I have to understand that driving afterwards is a dangerous game.<br\/>Society must also take on board this message: tighter controls, explicit campaigns, exchanges with young people.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To conclude<\/h3>\n\n<p>Talking about cannabis behind the wheel isn&#8217;t about scaring people: it&#8217;s about making them think.<br\/>A second&#8217;s inattention, a slowed reflex, can cost a life.<br\/>And that life&#8230; it&#8217;s worth more than the moment.<br\/>If I&#8217;ve learned one thing, it&#8217;s that the freedom to drive safely deserves vigilance.<br\/>And that open, sincere dialogue can change behavior.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mylasertabac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/mlt-verteau.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remember the feeling of invulnerability I had when I was young, behind the wheel.
