A new stage in the fight against smoking<\/h2>\n\n

From July 1, 2025<\/strong>, a new measure will transform our daily lives: smoking will be banned on beaches, in public gardens, in urban forests and in the immediate vicinity of schools<\/strong>. This is a major decision, taken by the government as part of the forthcoming public health law. This regulation, already applied in some pioneering communes, will now become the national norm<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

This initiative is part of an ambitious public health policy aimed at reducing the prevalence of smoking in France, which remains one of the highest in Western Europe.<\/p>\n\n

Why this ban? A desire to protect health and the environment <\/h2>\n\n

Protecting non-smokers<\/h3>\n\n
<\/div>\n\n

The primary aim of the ban on smoking in open public spaces is to protect non-smokers<\/strong> – especially children – from passive smoking<\/strong>. In playgrounds and after school, children are often exposed to cigarette smoke. This law aims to protect their health and living environment, and to set an example that is consistent with the prevention messages conveyed at school. <\/p>\n\n

Combating the trivialization of the gesture<\/h3>\n\n
<\/div>\n\n

It’s also a question ofavoiding the trivialization of smoking<\/strong> in public spaces. Seeing an adult smoking on a park bench or in the sand can contribute to normalizing<\/strong> this behavior among the very young. The aim is clear: to discourage the initiation of smoking in adolescence<\/strong>, a pivotal moment when most smokers begin their consumption. <\/p>\n\n

A major ecological challenge<\/h3>\n\n
<\/div>\n\n

In addition to health, this measure also responds to an ecological emergency<\/strong>. Every year more than 23 billion cigarette butts<\/a><\/strong> are thrown on the ground in France. This waste takes up to 15 years to decompose<\/strong>, releasing toxic substances that pollute soil and waterways. On beaches, a single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 500 liters of water<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

By making beaches and green spaces smoke-free, the French government also intends to preserve these places of nature<\/strong> and reduce<\/strong> tobacco-related pollution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

National regulations based on local experience<\/h2>\n\n

Some French cities, such as Nice, Marseille, Biarritz and Strasbourg<\/strong>, had already taken the lead. In Strasbourg, schools have been smoke-free since 2022. In Biarritz, the C\u00f4te des Basques beach has been smoke-free since 2019. These examples demonstrate the effectiveness and gradual acceptance of<\/strong> this type of measure by the public<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

This nationwide rollout will standardize the rules<\/strong>, making them more visible and comprehensible to all.<\/p>\n\n
