Since Sunday June 29, 2025, new regulations have been in force in France, marking a significant step forward in the fight against smoking. The decree published in the Journal Officiel now bans smoking in several outdoor public spaces, including parks, beaches, bus shelters and around schools. This measure aims to protect the health of citizens, particularly children, and reduce exposure to passive smoking. <\/p>\n\n

The Ministry of Health, headed by Catherine Vautrin, has specified that the ban applies within a perimeter of at least 10 meters around schools, libraries, swimming pools and sports facilities. Passenger waiting areas, such as bus shelters, are also covered. This extension of smoke-free areas is part of the “G\u00e9n\u00e9ration sans tabac” plan, aimed at denormalizing tobacco consumption in public places frequented by young people. <\/p>\n\n

Offenders are liable to a fixed fine of 135 euros, rising to 750 euros in the event of a repeat offence. An awareness-raising period is planned to accompany the implementation of this measure. <\/p>\n\n

Tobacco remains one of the main causes of avoidable death in France, with over 75,000 deaths a year, or more than 200 a day.
